When developing each project, CAF designs the structure with the aid of the most up-to-date software tools available today.
Using the finite elements method, static and dynamic calculations are made in order to ensure that the driver and the passengers are protected in the event of a collision and that the structure can withstand the forces that would occur during the normal operation of the train.
The objective of the crash calculations is to:
The calculations made are validated by correlating the results with tests, complying with standard EN15227.

The static calculations for the body structure, according to EN 12663, make it possible to analyse the integrity of the structure in real situations , such as when hauling a unit, a passenger overload or a case of re-railing.
In addition to the shell, the frames and other bogie components, such as the wheels and axle boxes, are assessed in order to achieve safe designs that will prevent failure, also from the point of view of material fatigue.
