The CAF-Thales consortium signed a contract with Metro de Santiago in 2013 to supply new automatic metro units for lines 3 and 6. In addition to the signalling system, the project includes the production and commissioning of 185 cars with air conditioning, passenger information systems and surveillance cameras, amongst other innovations.
The new trains will run without drivers in full automatic mode. This system provides maximum reliability and safety as a result of cutting-edge technology applied to circulation monitoring and the prevention of human error. Another highlight is the improved energy efficiency of these new trains.
The Lines 3 and 6 project is the most ambitious in the history of the Santiago Metro and one of the most important national infrastructure milestones under execution. It is expected to accommodate over a million potential passengers in the network with 28 new stations.
