CAF is the supplier of the new LRVs for the state of Maryland, in the USA. These modular railcars are made up of 5 modules and are intended to run on the Purple Line. The new vehicles have air conditioning equipment, passenger counting system and visual and acoustic passenger information systems, among others.
The Purple Line is the Light Rail line that will link Bethesda in the Montgomery County with New Carrollton in the Prince George's County. It will provide a direct connection to the red, green and orange lines of the Washington metro (WMATA), and interchanges with MARC and AMTRAK commuter and intercity services in addition to local bus routes.
CAF will not only supply the rolling stock, but it has also a stake in the company that will operate and maintain the light railway system.This is a Public Private Partnership to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Purple Line.
The light rail vehicles will be manufactured at CAF’s plant in Elmira, in the state of New York.
