CAF is awarded a new contract in Northern Ireland to supply, and maintain, 20 diesel units.

CAF and Translink, the organization that manages public transport in Northern Ireland and the owner of Northern Ireland Railways, have executed a new contract for the supply of 60 DMU cars including maintenance service for a 15 year period. This operation amounts to an aggregate of €160 M.

This is the second time that NIR and Translink award this type of project to CAF as 69 cars of the Class 3000 DMU were manufactured and delivered by the Company in 2002. CAF set up the Company’s subsidiary, CAF Rail Services UK Ltd., in the United Kingdom in 2004 to provide these services.

The new trains are arranged as 20 units, each with 3 cars, as was the case in the previous series, but with the capacity to increase the number of cars per train in the future, and they will run on the whole Northern Ireland network providing service between several towns at up to 160 km/h.

This type of unit, Class 4000, is a development of the previous design which was subject to a thorough review as regards traction systems with the aim to adapt to the new European pollution release prevention regulations, cutting down in fuel consumption and maintenance costs and contributing to a more environmentally-friendly train. Planned train capacity is 211 seats plus 2 wheelchair places.

Worthy of mention is the fact that Translink recently scooped the major awards at the prestigious HSBC Rail Business Awards for the UK railway industry as “Rail Business of the Year ”, in addition to the Rolling Stock Excellence accolade as a result of the superb performance of Class 3000 units delivered by CAF.
