R + D: New solutions for sustainable transport
R+D plays a predominant role in CAF's activities. The importance CAF gives to the development of new technologies shows their firm commitment to provide knew knowledge to achieve a more sustainable world, with efficient transport solutions.
To this regard, CAF heads up various research projects with the intention of developing a new generation of trains fitted with technologies which respect the environment.
AVI 2015: High Speed with less energy consumption
Applying sustainable technologies to the new interoperable trains reduces energy by 10%, by means of:
- More efficient traction system
- Less aerodynamic resistance to forward motion
- Lighter materials
- New greases and lubrication fluids

EcoTrans: The urban transport of the future
Ecotrans is a Cenit research project with the main objective of developing technologies required to provide passengers with more attractive public urban transport in a not too far off future (comfortable, punctual, fast, safe, reliable) with less environmental impact (low energy consumption, low visual impact, low noise impact).
The project's research activities feature new public transport operation technologies, new technologies for the reduction in consumption of energy, control, HVAC, materials and vehicles. These technologies are intended to be later broadened to other applications in the transport section, such as goods transport or intercity transport, and also to other sectors, such as energy or construction.

ACR: Catenary-less LRV CAF solution
CAF has developed an on-board train energy storage system, which accumulates braking energy, permitting the elimination of electrical wiring between stops. The Rapid Charge Accumulator (ACR) is CAF’s state of the art solution for the catenary-free LRV.
This groundbreaking technology, entirely unprecedented in revenue service, will contribute to improved integration of urban transport in the cities, reducing visual impact in heritage areas and increasing energy efficiency.
