Railways and the environment. On track for efficiency.
The growing need to preserve the environment, to reduce greenhouse effect emissions and to achieve complete sustainable development has become one of the main company objectives.
To this regards, the transport sector is tackling the serious challenge of providing transport solutions which respect the natural environment, and which respond to the progressive global demand for modern and comfortable transport networks.
The important ecological advantages of railways has made it the most efficient and competitive system, with great potential to reduce environmental impact, improve citizen's quality of life, and actively contribute in ecosystem protection. A system which favours the procurement of the objectives of the Kioto protocol and the European plans to reduce CO2 emission levels by 30% in 2020.
According to the Green Jobs Initiative, part of the United Nations Programme for the Environment (PNUMA) and the International Work Organisation (OIY), the railway is one of the key sectors to achieve sustained social and financial growth, compatible with climate stabilisation. In this transition to clean development, CAF plays a particularly relevant role given their capacity to improve transport energy costs and to provide highly efficient transport alternatives.
