The CAF Group designs and produces electric traction systems for all types of rolling stock.
One of CAF's main strategic lines is the development of their own technology, which supports and adapts to other research, development and innovation activities performed at CAF, with the purpose of providing rail operators with an efficient and reliable tool for the execution of their commercial activities and of providing the train users with state-of-the-art technological comforts.
The engineering department boasts groups specialising in:
- Power electronics. They design the power cores based on state-of-the-art semiconductor and power items technology. They size the power equipment by means of complex electrical and thermic simulations based on mathematic models of the various components and equipment, choosing and specifying the power items which are best adapted to the requirements of each item of equipment, guaranteeing optimum performance of each application of the final equipment.
- Electromechanics. They perform the electromechanical design of the power cores and electric boxes, guaranteeing optimum designs regarding dimensions, weight, sturdyness and ease of maintenance, all of which meets the strictest rail standards.
- Microelectronics. They design the control electronics of high performance, modularity and configurability. The control electronics are designed with reference to the on-board control electronics rail standards, meeting the strictest requirements (in CEMs, vibrations, temperature, etc.) of the standards and guaranteeing correct operation in the rail environment.
- Automatic and control. They develop the optimum control algorithms for the control of power cores with the purpose of maximising the system’s efficiency, performing a smooth, reliable and robust control of the equipment, and guaranteeing the highest energy efficiency.
- Software. They design software applications which control the specific logic of each train. The software design is based on a robust and reliable software engineering process, in accordance with the specific customer requirements. The software applications are based on the development of reusable components which have been tested on various applications, whereby a high quality design is guaranteed.
- Validation. They develop validation environments which facilitate the design validation for each application, whereby fulfilment of the customer's requirements are guaranteed, together with the robust design of each of the sytems' items. They create validation systems which permit maximising the automatic unitary validation of each item, validating the integration of the items and validating the system as a whole.
