CAF signs a contract for the supply of 33 Suburban Units for the Turkish city Izmir. The amount of the contract is € 123 m.

CAF has signed today a contract for the supply of 33 Suburban EMUs for the Turkish city IZMIR. This contract has been executed between CAF and IZBAN, a Turkish company 50% of which is owned by TCDD (Turkish Railway Organization) and the other 50% by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The operation amounts to €123 million.

These are large capacity suburban EMUs comprising 3 motor cars with austenitic Stainless Steel bodyshells, 24 V AC current collection, in a total length of 70 metres and with a maximum transport capacity of 740 passengers. The EMU has the most advanced technology for crash protection, fire and fumes resistance and other equipment such as Passenger Information System, Video entertainment, CCTV, etc.

The first deliveries are scheduled for early 2010.

Izmir (Esmirna) is the third city in Turkey, with a population in excess of 2.6 million and located at the Egean coast, about 450 km southwest of Istanbul.

This is CAF’s third project in Turkey in the last few years. In 2005 the Company signed a contract for the supply of 10 High Speed Units for the Ankara-Istanbul line, which was extended with 2 further units in end 2007. In mid 2007, the coastal town Antalya awarded the design, development and commissioning of a network of trams to a joint venture of CAF and the Turkish builder ALARCO. CAF's position in this country is thus consolidated.

This is the third different product that CAF is selling in Turkey, after the High Speed train and the metropolitan units Tram units. Now the Company enters the suburban niche in this country thereby asserting CAF's broad and competitive range of products for all type of needs in the Railway Industry.

With this operation, and by adding the three contracts signed up to date in Turkey, CAF brings up its turnover to over €400 m in this country.
