In 2022, CAF secured a deal with the Dutch state-owned operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen to supply DDNG (Double Deck Next Generation) double-decker trains. These new 4 and 6-car electric units consist of single and double-decker cars which offer high passenger capacity on each unit.
This is the first ever double-decker vehicle of the Civity DUO platform. The unit can run at 160km/h and is designed to provide maximum passenger comfort. Civity trains feature optimum accessibility for people with reduced mobility, PRM-adapted WCs and areas specifically designated for wheelchairs.
The first units are scheduled to start operating on Intercity routes across the country in 2028. An option to extend the number of units that can run on cross-border routes to Germany is also under consideration.
CAF's strong relationship with the Dutch operator dates back many years. The company signed their first contract in 2014 for Civity platform commuter trains, which was subsequently extended for the supply of additional units.
