Prince Charles visited the CAF Group’s Newport plant, in Wales, where he was welcomed by CAF’s CEO Andres Arizkorreta, together with several CAF executives.
During his visit, the Prince of Wales gained first-hand insight into CAF's production processes set up at this factory and the progress of projects currently underway.
It should be stressed that CAF designed this plant from inception as a pilot plant to test the Digital Factory vision that revolves around the idea of "connected workers". Highlights include the prevalent use of tablets for instructions and information concerning assigned tasks, which streamlines networking connection between employees and information systems.
The plant currently employs a workforce of almost 250, and is prepared for the manufacturing all types of railway vehicles, including both the assembling and finishing of vehicles, in addition to all the tests required before commissioning for service.
The result of an almost €40 million investment, these facilities allow CAF to adequately cope with recently secured UK contracts, further consolidating CAF's position in this market, where it is currently implementing a number of contracts with various operators such as Arriva UK, First Group, Serco Group Plc, West Midlands Trains Ltd, KeolisAmey and Transport for London, for an approximate aggregate of €2.5 billion.
