Innovation and technology

Shift2Rail is the first European joint rail technology initiative focused on research and innovation (R&I) and market-oriented solutions to facilitate the integration of new and state-of-the-art technologies into innovative rail solutions and products. CAF is also one of the founding members of the “Europe’s Rail” undertaking that will continue to operate in the next few years under the “Horizon Europe” Framework Program.

CAF is one of the 8 Founding Members of Shift2Rail and is a member of its Governing Board. CAF plays an active role in the initiative, being one of its main responsibilities acting as coordinator of the Innovation Program 1 - "Cost-efficient and reliable trains, including high-capacity trains and high-speed trains".

CAF & FCH2Rail

CAF is the technology leader of the European FCH2Rail project with designs to develop a dual-mode (electric-hydrogen) train prototype. This vehicle will be able to run along electrified lines powered by the catenary and also powered by hydrogen on lines or sections which are not electrified, thereby optimising overall consumption.

CAF Startup Station is the Venture Client unit of the CAF Group, set up to collaborate with top tier startups with potentially relevant and innovative solutions in the integrated transport sector. The main goal is to build and consolidate client-supplier relationships between the various startups and the CAF Group.

CAF & 5G Technology

CAF is making prototypes to use 5G technology for its communications for critical and non critical applications. These prototypes use the Mobile Edge Computing and the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) ecosystem features, which will be the 5G worldwide standard for railway operational communications.
